What Is Poured-in-Place Rubber?

Poured-in-place (PIP) rubber surfacing is precisely what it sounds like — a rubberized material that is poured directly onto the ground and then hardened into place.

It provides a seamless, monolithic surface with no cracks or edges to trip over or snag clothing on.
The rubber surface also provides cushioning against falls, making it an ideal surface for playgrounds where children may fall from heights of three feet or higher.

Where You Can Apply It

PIP rubber surfaces are perfect for use in public parksschoolsdaycare centers, churches, residential developments — anywhere there’s a need for quality safety surfacing!
These surfaces meet or exceed ADA requirements and ASTM standards and have been tested to withstand thousands of hours of playtime without showing signs of significant wear or tear.
This makes them one of the best options for choosing a safe and reliable playground surface material.

Playground Applications of PIP

PIP rubber surfaces are ideal for playgrounds because they provide superior protection against falls and slips. They also reduce noise and help keep the area cool during hot summer days.
Because they’re constructed from pre-consumer recycled materials free of contaminants, they’re environmentally friendly, making them an excellent choice for any green-minded business or organization.
On top of that, these surfaces are available in various colors to match any park’s design aesthetic.

– PIP Rubber Slides and Climbing Walls

Slides and climbing walls are two of the most popular attractions on any playground. They offer kids plenty of fun and exercise, but they can also be dangerous if not properly constructed.
Many playground owners use PIP rubber for these features. Its soft yet resilient surface ensures that kids won’t get hurt while they play.
Plus, they come in various colors, so you can customize your playground however you like!

– Playground Flooring

On top of slides and climbing walls, PIP rubber can also be used as flooring for your entire playground area.
This surface provides a soft cushion for kids who fall off the equipment or want to lie down and relax after a long day of playing.
Additionally, this material won’t absorb heat from the sun like asphalt or concrete would — so it will stay cool even during hot summer days!

– Alternative to Rubber Mulch

PIP rubber can also be used as an alternative to traditional wood mulch.
This material is much more durable than wood mulch and doesn’t break down over time like traditional mulch. It won’t attract bugs or other pests, making it ideal for outdoor spaces.
In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, PIP rubber mulch provides a safe surface for kids to play on since there are no sharp edges or corners that could cause injury if stepped on or tripped over.

– Rubber Tiles and Pavers

PIP rubber tiles and pavers are perfect for areas where children are likely to run around or engage in active play, such as near swing sets or slides. These materials provide an extra layer of protection against slips and falls due to their traction-friendly design; plus, they come in various shapes and sizes so that you can create an exciting pattern throughout your playground space!

Frequently Asked Questions About Pour in Place Rubber

Typically, the price of a poured in place rubber surface ranges from $12-$18 per sq ft.

The thickness of the surface is a crucial factor in determining the overall cost, as thicker surfaces may offer better durability and longevity but may also raise the price. Additionally, the selected color can impact the cost since certain colors may require additional materials or labor.

A pour-in-place rubber surface, when installed to standard specifications and maintained properly, can provide a durable and long-lasting flooring solution. In general, a standard pour-in-place rubber surface can last up to 10 years without needing to be resurfaced.

It is essential to note that the longevity of the surface may vary based on factors such as foot traffic, weather conditions, and overall usage. Proper care and maintenance, such as regular cleaning and periodic inspections, can help extend the life of the surface and ensure it continues to perform optimally.

Compared to concrete, poured in place rubber is a more expensive flooring option, with costs ranging from $10 to $15 per square foot compared to concrete, which typically costs between $4 and $8 per square foot. However, the higher price of poured in place rubber is justified by its exceptional safety benefits and long-term cost savings.

Poured in place rubber surfaces offer unparalleled safety advantages, especially in playgrounds and other areas where children play. The rubber surface provides excellent cushioning and reduces the impact of falls, minimizing the risk of serious injuries. As a result, parents and caregivers can have peace of mind knowing that children are playing on a safe and secure surface.

Moreover, poured in place rubber is highly durable and resistant to cracking, which means that it requires minimal maintenance compared to concrete surfaces. Over time, concrete surfaces may crack, requiring costly repairs, which can add up to significant maintenance expenses. In contrast, poured in place rubber surfaces maintain their integrity over extended periods, leading to long-term cost savings.

Poured in place rubber surfaces can become uncomfortably hot when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. This is because, like any other material, rubber can absorb and retain heat energy from the sun, causing the surface temperature to rise. However, compared to concrete, rubber has a lower thermal conductivity, which means that it can absorb and transfer heat energy more slowly. As a result, while rubber surfaces can still become hot when exposed to sunlight, they may not become as hot as concrete surfaces.

Poured in place rubber is specifically designed as a permeable surface rather than a waterproof one. This characteristic enables water to flow through the material and disperse into the ground, making it an ideal solution for outdoor environments. By preventing the formation of puddles and standing water, the risk of slip and fall accidents is significantly reduced.

The permeability of poured in place rubber is achieved through the intentional creation of a porous surface, allowing water to pass through it. The rubber material itself is not watertight by design, so when water comes into contact with the surface, it seeps through the small openings and penetrates the ground beneath.

Beyond its safety advantages, the permeability of poured in place rubber renders it an environmentally conscious option for outdoor surfaces. As it facilitates the movement of water through the material and into the ground, it helps to minimize runoff and erosion that may otherwise occur during heavy rainfall events.
